Body of foreign ship crew member who fell overboard into Batang Igan found

KUCHING, April 14: A foreign ship crew member who reportedly fell from a ship into  Batang Igan near a shipyard on Jalan Sungai Maaw in Sibu on Thursday (April 11) was found yesterday (April 13).

The Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Sarawak received a report of the discovery of the victim’s body at 8.50am, according to a spokesperson.


The spokesperson stated that members of the search and rescue operation (SAR) went to the scene of the incident to recover the victim’s body.

“The body was found under the Boh Ming Beading Farm jetty five kilometres from the Fire Control Centre downstream of the Batang Igan River, as reported by the public to the police.

“The body was then taken to Simpang 3 Sibu to be handed over to the police for further action,” he said in a statement.

The SAR operation that started on April 11 ended at 10am yesterday morning.

The victim, Jamwal Akash, 23 years old, was reported to have fallen into the Batang Igan river around 10am (April 11).

“During the incident, the witness heard the sound of the victim falling from the ship and saw the victim lying on the surface of the water about 30 metres from the ship,” he added.

The victim’s SAR operation was launched after the report was received. — DayakDaily
