Indian ship crew member feared drowned after falling from ship in Sibu.

KUCHING, April 12: An incident occurred yesterday near a shipyard on Jalan Sungai Maaw in Sibu, after a crew member of a ship reportedly fell overboard into the Batang Igan River and is believed to have drowned.

According to a statement from the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), they received an alert about the incident at 3.02pm.


Firefighters from the Sungai Merah fire station were immediately dispatched to the scene.

“One victim, a 23-year-old Indian male, is believed to have drowned in the Batang Igan River around 10am today.

“A witness at the scene reported hearing the sound of the victim falling from the Tanjung Embang ship, and saw the victim floating on the water’s surface approximately 30 metres away from the ship.

The Marine Police Force also participated in the operation involving a five-kilometre radius search up to the Batang Igan Bridge, but the victim has yet to be found.

“The operation commander gathered information from the police and witnesses at the scene of the incident.

“Following discussions with the police, the SAR (search and rescue) operation will continue the next day at 8.30am,” the statement read. — DayakDaily
