KUCHING, April 14: Nine-year-old Vallerie Mentie Dawellies was found drowned while her father is still missing after currents swept away the four-wheel-drive vehicle they were in as they crossed Sungai Sengayan, Long Jekitan, in Ulu Baram today.

According to a spokesperson from the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), Vallerie’s body was found by villagers about 2km from where the incident occurred and was brought to her family’s home at Long Tikan.

“Her father, 46-year-old Dawellies Luing, who works as a primary school student management assistant at SK Long Jekitan, is still missing,” said the spokesperson.

The Marudi station received an emergency call on the incident at noon today from the Marudi district police headquarters.

It was understood that at around 8am, Dawellies, his wife, and daughter were in the vehicle, which a villager drove.

When attempting to cross Sungai Sengayan, the vehicle got stuck, causing the engine to die, and it was swept away by strong currents.

The driver and Dawellies’ wife managed to swim to safety. — DayakDaily
