SIBU, July 5: Four people have died and six others remain missing after a boat capsized near Kampung Belawai beach earlier today.
The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Tanjung Manis received an emergency call at 2.11pm and immediately deployed a team of six firefighters to the scene, located about 22km from the station.
Upon arrival, the Operations Deployment Team (PKO) discovered that the incident involved a fiber-type boat carrying 17 passengers.
According to the operation commander in the initial report, seven passengers, including the boat operator, survived the incident.
A shoreline search and rescue (SAR) operation is currently underway, conducted by Bomba personnel using a rescue boat, with assistance from a Sarawak Coast Guard vessel.
As of now, authorities are still gathering information on the victims from the surviving boat operator.
The Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM), Civil Defence Force (APM), and the People’s Volunteer Corps (Rela) are among the enforcement agencies involved in the ongoing SAR operation. — DayakDaily
