KUCHING, Sept 17: Bintulu Port Authority (Sarawak) has appointed Bintulu Port Holdings Bhd’s (BPHB) wholly-owned subsidiary, Bintulu Port Sdn Bhd (BPSB), as the approved port operator for Bintulu Port for 30 years, effective Sept 1, 2026 to Aug 31, 2056.

BPHB said the appointment had been approved by the Sarawak Legislative Assembly and formalised through the Bintulu Port Authority (Sarawak) (Appointment of Approved Port Operator) Notification, 2026.

The notification was published in the Sarawak Government Gazette, Part II, dated Sept 10, 2026, pursuant to Section 12(2)(a) of the Port Authorities Ordinance, 1961.

In a filing with the stock exchange, BPHB said the appointment followed the Sarawak Ministry of Infrastructure and Port Development’s notification to BPSB on June 23 that the State government had approved in principle its appointment as the approved port operator for Bintulu Port.

Under the appointment, BPSB will perform, carry out and provide port undertakings at Bintulu Port, subject to full compliance with the Port Authorities Ordinance, 1961, as well as any by-laws, regulations and subsidiary legislation made under the ordinance.

BPHB said BPSB would also implement the terms and conditions set out in the Heads of Agreement (HOA) dated July 27, 2026, entered into between the Sarawak government, Bintulu Port Authority and BPSB.

“The HOA terms and conditions shall continue to apply until the Port Operation Concession Agreement (POCA) is duly executed by those parties.

“Upon execution, the POCA shall be binding on BPSB and govern its operation of Bintulu Port,” BPHB said.

The appointment provides the formal framework for BPSB to operate Bintulu Port over the 30-year period, with the detailed rights and obligations of the parties to be governed by the POCA once executed. — Bernama
