BINTULU, Feb 17: BINTULU, [Date] – A landslide triggered by continuous heavy rain at the slope between the Bintulu Port water reservoir and the Pusaka LPG Bottling Plant has caused erosion, partially exposing approximately one-fifth of the reservoir’s foundation.
In a recent media statement, Bintulu Port Sdn Bhd (BPSB) assured that the overall structure of the tank remains intact, with no compromise to its integrity or safety.
“As a precautionary measure, the water in the tank has been emptied,” it stated.
The landslide, which occurred on Jan 29, also disrupted operations at the Pusaka LPG Bottling Plant, operated by Pusaka Integrated Resources Sdn Bhd (PIRSB).
Bintulu Port emphasised that it is working closely with relevant authorities, including the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH), to mitigate further erosion and implement all necessary safety measures.
“The safety of our staff, stakeholders, and the surrounding community remains our top priority. We are committed to collaborating with all stakeholders to support PIRSB in restoring operations,” the statement added.
In response to the disruption, PetrosNiaga, the commercial arm of Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros), has redirected liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) distribution from the Bintulu terminal to the Senari IOT facility in Kuching.
On Feb 10, Minister of Utility and Telecommunication Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi confirmed that PetrosNiaga has activated its Business Continuity Plan to ensure an uninterrupted LPG supply for domestic and commercial users across Sarawak.
Meanwhile, both PIRSB and Bintulu Port have commenced stabilisation and recovery efforts to restore operations once the site is deemed safe. — DayakDaily
