KUCHING, Aug 22: Bintulu MP Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing has demanded an explanation from the Bintulu District Health Department on their “carelessness” with regards to adhering to the prescribed SOP.

Tiong was responding to the finding of four crew members of an oil and gas tanker that berthed in Bintulu waters who tested positive for Covid-19 on August 20, calling on the Bintulu Health Department to take the cases of Covid-19 pandemic in Bintulu seriously and exercise full precautionary measures to contain a possible outbreak following cases reported from the oil and gas tanker.

“The (Bintulu Health) Department must report the matter to the Bintulu District Officer, who is also the chairman of the Bintulu Disaster Management Committee (DMC), immediately upon detecting suspected symptoms of the novel coronavirus onboard any incoming ships.”

According to Tiong, this would be the second time that the District Officer had not been notified of such an incident.

“The Sarawak director of Health must take this matter seriously and not repeat the same mistakes,” he said in a statement.

He also urged the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) to investigate the matter thoroughly as he believed Bintulu health officials had neglected to fully carry out their responsibilities to implement the preventive measures for Covid-19 along guidelines established by the Federal and State governments. —DayakDaily
