Bintulu listed as top 20 happiest town in Malaysia

KUCHING, March 21: Bintulu has been named one of the top 20 happiest towns in Malaysia for 2025, according to the Malaysia Happiness Index.

The Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT) announced that eight districts were awarded the happiest towns (District Council Category) recognition, while 12 others received the recognition under the ‘city council/ municipal council’ category. It made this announcement last night during the National Level World Happiness Day Celebration in Putrajaya.

According to a news report by Bernama which cited a statement by KPKT, Bintulu shares this ‘happiness’ status with 11 other towns which are Temerloh (Pahang), Klang Royal City (Selangor), Jasin (Melaka), Batu Pahat (Pontian), and Johor Bahru (Johor).

Other towns that receive recognition under the same category are Putrajaya, Petaling Jaya (Selangor), Melaka City (Melaka), Ampang Jaya (Selangor), and Port Dickson (Negeri Sembilan).

Districts that were recognised as some of the happiest places in Malaysia are Lipis, Pahang; Telupid, Sabah; Cameron Highlands and Jerantut in Pahang; Kuala Krai, Kelantan; Bandar Baharu, Kedah; Kuala Pilah and Jelebu in Negeri Sembilan.

A total of 153 local authorities across Peninsular Malaysia, the Federal Territories (Putrajaya, Kuala Lumpur, and Labuan), Sabah, and Sarawak participated in the Happiness Index survey.

The survey also showed that 115 towns or 75 per cent achieved ‘happy’ status, while 38 (25 per cent) were classified as ‘moderately happy’.

The Happiness Index was measured based on global happiness assessment criteria which focuses on factors such as stress levels, health conditions, family relationships, and level of satisfaction with regards to facilities and quality of services provided by local leaders. – DayakDaily
