KUCHING, April 6: Bintulu has been identified by the World Economic Forum (WEF) as one of four emerging low-carbon industrial clusters globally, thanks to its advancements in renewable energy and low-carbon industrial development, revealed Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

In his speech during the Bintulu Development Authority Aidilfitri 2025 Open House Event in Bintulu today, he shared that WEF had identified only four areas worldwide, with Malaysia’s representative being Bintulu.

“They (WEF) see that Bintulu is an industrial development centre that uses renewable energy and has industries with low carbon footprint, in line with global demands,” he said.

“This recognition puts us on the world stage. We cannot take things for granted, if international parties have recognised us positively and with WEF, where world leaders and advanced economies gather, have identified us, it means Sarawak can be seen as on par with other developed countries,” Abang Johari said.

With that, the Premier also revealed that he has been invited to speak at the prestigious WEF gathering in Davos at the end of this year.

“This is our achievement, we must work hard, not only to elevate our status but also to earn global honour and recognition. So be prepared, if the world acknowledges us, it means investments will come to the whole of Sarawak, especially in the Bintulu area.

“We have a far-sighted Bintulu community, a closely-knit Bintulu community, a community that can embrace new opportunities, and ensure the prosperity and well-being of this town with its well-structured infrastructure,” he added.

Earlier in March, the WEF, represented by its head of Community, Regional and Global Cooperation for Asia-Pacific, Shaun Adam, made a courtesy visit to Abang Johari.

During the meeting, the establishment of an industrial cluster in Bintulu and a deeper understanding of Sarawak’s efforts in the transition to renewable energy, particularly concerning hydrogen, were discussed. – DayakDaily
