KUCHING, Jan 29: In an urgent plea, Hulu Rajang Member of Parliament (MP) Datuk Wilson Ugak Kumbong, has called for federal and Sarawak governments’ intervention as severe flooding impacts various parts of Bintulu, disrupting daily life and affecting key infrastructure.
Speaking to reporters, Ugak highlighted the serious situation, particularly near the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) facility and other affected areas.
“Bintulu is facing a major flood crisis. Thus, I wish to seek help from the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) to act immediately, and we need federal agencies such as the Civil Defense Force (APM) and the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) to deploy emergency teams to assist the residents.
“Some areas in Bintulu such as Hulu Tubau and Jelalong have been severely impacted, with road access disrupted,” he said after attending the Sarawak-level Chinese New Year (CNY) Open House 2025 held at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) today.
Ugak, who is Deputy Minister of Digital, revealed that his officers had been working tirelessly, with some flying overnight and landing in Miri at 2am to coordinate relief efforts.
He also shared that his own home in Bintulu has been affected by the floodwaters and that he will return early to assess the situation firsthand.
Meanwhile, he informed that the Welfare Department is working to provide aid, using boats to deliver emergency supplies where necessary.
“I have directed local Tuai Rumah (village heads) to collaborate with the Welfare Department to ensure food and relief supplies reach affected communities efficiently,” he added.

In another development, Telang Usan assemblyman Datuk Dennis Ngau shared a video on Facebook showing his home in Senadin, Miri, partially submerged in floodwaters today.
“You can see the water is almost entering our living room. If the rain continues, it will definitely come in,” he said in the video.
In his caption, he added: “Our house at 10.30am today. The rain has started again, so it’s very likely our home will be affected.” – DayakDaily
