SIBU, May 25: Make Permai Lake Garden a food court for all races instead of just for a single race, says Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) chairman Clarence Ting concerning a Dayak non-governmental organisation’s application to turn Permai Lake Garden into a Dayak food court.

Ting said it was better to create a food court for all races as Sibu in general, especially in Taman Permai in particular, is inhabited by people of many races.

“If the place is for Medan Selera Dayak only, you will not have good business as other races might not want to come. Make it a food court for all instead because Taman Permai is inhabited by various races,” he said when chairing the council’s monthly meeting today.

He also said it was not good to cater to one race only as it would affect business in the long run.

Last Sunday night (May 22), Sarawak Dayak National Union (SDNU) Sibu chairman Chambai Lindong when speaking at the closing of the Sibu Gawai Bazaar recommended that SMC convert the Sibu Gawai Bazaar site in Taman Tasik Permai into a Dayak food court.

He said there were many visitors throughout the 10 days the bazaar was held.

Chambai said, several stalls in the park have been abandoned for a long time following the Covid-19 pandemic.

Thus, he proposed that the park be given to the Dayak business community to open a food court.

He explained that if the Dayak community here has its own food court, it will allow Sibu to have a new attraction and later become a landmark for the Dayak community here.

He said the intention to create a Dayak food court in Sibu had been planned for a long time but could not be implemented due to the lack of land. — DayakDaily
