KUCHING, July 6: The body of a boy who was a passenger on the boat that capsized near Kampung Belawai beach was found, bringing the total number of deaths to five.
According to a report from the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), the body was found by rescuers at around 6pm, approximately 300m downstream from the Central Disaster Operations Control Centre (PKOB).
With the discovery of the boy’s body, the number of missing people has decreased to five.
The search and rescue (SAR) operation, which entered its second day today, was postponed at 6.40pm and will resume tomorrow (July 7).
On Saturday (July 5), Bomba received an emergency call at 2.11pm pertaining to the incident.
Upon arrival, the Operations Deployment Team (PKO) discovered that the capsized vessel was a fibreglass boat carrying 17 Indonesian nationals along with daily essentials.
In addition to the discovery of the boy’s body, the incident also claimed the lives of four individuals, including two women, one boy, and one girl, whose bodies were recovered by rescuers.
Seven passengers survived the incident, comprising four men, including the boat operator, two women, and one boy.
The ill-fated boat had departed from the Kampung Belawai fishermen’s jetty and was en route to the coconut plantation jetty when it capsized just before reaching its destination. — DayakDaily
