BEKENU, March 28: Construction of the Bekenu Waterfront Project at Kampung Rambai is set to begin on April 4, with completion expected within a year.
Valued at RM4.13 million, the project aims to revamp the riverbank with modern, community-friendly recreational facilities, enhancing both the area’s leisure appeal and economic potential.
At the groundbreaking ceremony today, Bekenu assemblywoman Datuk Rosey Yunus, who is also Sarawak’s Deputy Minister of Women, Childhood, and Community Well-being Development, highlighted the project’s significance, stating that this is not just a physical development but “an investment in our collective well-being, prosperity, and future”.
According to Rosey, the project is expected to see the waterfront feature various amenities along the banks of Sungai Kampung Rambai, located directly opposite Bekenu Market, providing a scenic and vibrant recreational space for the community.
The new waterfront is also expected to enhance tourism, creating business opportunities for local residents.
“An attractive waterfront will draw visitors, leading to more business opportunities for our villagers. Shops, restaurants, and tourism-related activities will flourish, generating new economic prospects for our young people,” she said.
The project is also expected to further beautify the banks of Sungai Kampung Rambai, transforming it into a landmark for Sibuti while also serving as a protective measure against riverbank erosion.
The initiative will also lead to infrastructure improvements, such as better roads, street lighting, and public amenities, benefiting residents in their daily lives.
