BINTULU, Sept 21: Works Minister Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi has called for the Medan Jaya–Jalan Tun Hussein Onn Flyover Project to be completed before the next Gawai Dayak.
During a visit to the project site here today, he said that the project, which was supposed to be completed in 2024, has received three extensions of time (EOT) due to several issues at the construction site, including utility relocation.
Nanta, who is also Kapit MP, said that a major issue has been resolved, which is access to the Bintulu district police headquarters (IPD), and that the contractor has assured that the project can be completed by July 2027.
“After listening to the briefing from JKR earlier and hearing the response from the contractor, I can say that I am prepared to accept their proposed target of completing the project in July.
“But, if possible, we would like it to be completed earlier. That would be better—preferably before Gawai (Dayak),” he said to reporters.
According to a statement by the Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR), the RM135 million project, which was originally slated for completion by Sept 15, 2027, covers a 2.6-kilometre stretch and involves upgrading the road to eight lanes in two directions and six lanes in two directions, as well as constructing a four-lane, two-way flyover.
The scope also includes upgrading existing roads and improvements at the Medan Jaya and Taman Tinggi intersections. As of now, the project has reached 89.05 per cent physical progress.
Upon completion, the project is expected to help reduce traffic congestion at the Medan Jaya Intersection, particularly during peak hours, while improving road users’ comfort and safety.
The project is also expected to improve travel efficiency and contribute to the growth of local economic activities in Bintulu. — DayakDaily
