SIBU, March 22: A 21-year-old beautician was fleeced of RM10,000 by a person she befriended on social media app WeChat, after paying for face masks that were not delivered.

Sibu district police chief, ACP Stanley Jonathan Ringgit, said on March 16, the victim saw a posting on her WeChat friend’s account that she was selling face masks.

“The victim had placed a large order of 200 boxes costing RM10,000 of the item, as some of the face masks were for her friend,” he said.

She had, on March 16 and 18, transferred a total of RM10,000 to two different accounts provided by the suspect.

“However after making the transfers, she tried to contact her WeChat friend but failed as the number was no longer active,” he said.

The victim realised that she had been cheated and made a police report yesterday (March 21).

The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. — DayakDaily
