KUCHING, Sept 28: The proposed expansion of the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK 2) project to host large-scale business events, will cost over RM300 million.
Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg revealed this during the 9th Sarawak Hornbill Tourism Awards 2019-2023 gala dinner held at the Hikmah Exchange Event Centre (HEEC) here last night.
“I wish to inform you that we are going to expand our BCCK so that it can accommodate up to 15,000 people.
“At the moment, the existing building can only accommodate 5,000 people and we want to build another enclave accommodating an additional 10,000 people.
“That one will cost us (Sarawak government) over RM300 million,” he said.
On Aug 30, 2024, Sarawak Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts (MTCP) Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah revealed that the contractor had been identified for the construction of BCCK 2, with the completion date set before 2028.
He also said the Sarawak Cabinet have agreed to have the convention centres in Sarawak report to MTCP.
At the event, Abang Johari was presented with the Special Award for Tourism Regional Leadership Excellence ‘Championing Sustainable Growth’.
Also present were Abdul Karim; Deputy Minister of Tourism Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew; Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports Dato Gerald Rentap Jabu; MTCP permanent secretary Datu Sherrina Hussaini; Sarawak Tourism Federation (STF) president Audry Wan Ullok and Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) chief executive officer Sharzede Datu Salleh Askor. — DayakDaily
