KUCHING, Nov 30: The Bau District Council has been encouraged to establish a dedicated safety standard operating procedure (SOP) for homestay operators and water recreation sites in the area, in line with the need to enhance visitor safety.

According to a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas), Deputy Minister of Transport Sarawak (Riverine and Maritime) Datuk Henry Harry Jinep, said that aligning these SOPs would not only help improve community-based accommodation standards but also boost confidence among visitors seeking experiences in the area.

“I may suggest to the district council that we introduce some SOPs for homestay owners in terms of visitor safety, boat usage and so on, so that all SOPs meet a proper standard for good operation and management.

“We need to be more proactive, so they are aware of the importance of cleanliness and safety… sufficient electricity supply, fire extinguishers, and ensuring the area is not dark at night. These are among the aspects that the Bau District Council must consider,” he said at the closing ceremony of the Adis Tiporang River Safety and Cleanliness Awareness Programme at Kampung Segong, Bau, on Saturday (Nov 30).

He also proposed that homestay operators be given periodic exposure and training on safety requirements and waste management to ensure their accommodation services remain at a good standard and in line with local authority guidelines. — DayakDaily
