Batu Kawa Ang Cheng Ho quarry to be turned into ecotourism attraction

KUCHING, Mar 5: The state government has approved RM10 million to transform the abandoned Batu Kawa Ang Cheng Ho quarry overlooking a 20-acre natural lake into a destination offering diverse ecotourism attractions and activities.

Minister of Local Government and Housing Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian revealed that a banquet hall with the capacity of 150 tables and an innovation centre will be built in the first phase of the development project.

“I approached Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg and presented him with this RM10 million development project for Batu Kawa, and I am glad that the state government has approved it.


“The development project has obtained approval from Land and Survey Department (LSD) as well as the State Planning Unit (SPU),” he said after inspecting the abandoned quarry lake area today.

Dr Sim, who is Batu Kawah assemblyman, disclosed that the authorities will appoint the landscape designer as soon as possible to pave the way for the comprehensive development of the surrounding area.

“It has a beautiful natural lake and there is potential to be transformed into tourist attractions.

“In the development blueprint, we will transform it into diversified tourist area with activities and recreation area. The main selling point will be the quarry lake which will be developed for various water activities,” he said.

Dr Sim was optimistic that the development project will bring in more employment opportunities for the construction sector as well as to stimulate the economy. —DayakDaily
