KUCHING, Sept 27: The Batang Rambungan Bridge is targeted for completion by the fourth quarter of 2027, with a new contractor appointed and additional funding allocated for the project.
Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the measures would ensure the bridge could be completed as planned.
“We took over the Rambungan Bridge project, and InsyaAllah, we have appointed a new contractor and added some funding so that the Rambungan Bridge can be completed in 2027.
“With that, Tanjung Datu will have two connectivity routes — one through the Pan Borneo Highway and another through Jalan Matang. This will provide connectivity, linking Tanjung Datu to Tupong constituency. In other words, this will be an outlet or gateway to Tanjung Datu,” he said during the postponement ceremony of the Batang Kayan Regatta in Lundu today, which was broadcast live by Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS) on Youtube.
In his speech, Tanjung Datu assemblyman Azizul Annuar Adenan mentioned that the Rambungan Bridge was scheduled for completion by the fourth quarter of 2027.
“Therefore, I also have high hopes, together with the Sampadi zone community, that a hawker centre and marina can be built near the bridge as an interim project to create more economic opportunities and enhance tourism in the area,” he stated.
On July 7, 2026, the Batang Rambungan Bridge was reported to be 73.27 per cent complete, with the project still on track for completion by the end of the year despite a slight delay.
At the time, works had progressed to the installation of the first of eight cable-stayed segments.
The RM82 million project involves the construction of a 560m-long, two-lane, single-carriageway cable stayed bridge across Batang Rambungan, featuring two 51.4m-high inclined H-shaped pylons and a 320m main span. It also includes approximately 815m of new and upgraded approach roads, including a 255m section on the Kuching side.
The bridge is the first major bridge along the 896km Coastal Road, linking Simpang Sampadi in Lundu to Bakam in Miri. — DayakDaily
