KUCHING, July 1: The Saujana–SMK Matang Jaya bus route was officially launched today, marking the 10th and final route under the BAS.MY Kuching initiative and a major milestone in enhancing public transportation within the city.
With the rollout of this final route, Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (CVLB) Sarawak chairman Michael Kong said that BAS.MY Kuching has now completed the implementation of all 10 planned routes.
“This achievement is not just about fulfilling a commitment, but it represents a broader shift toward improving urban mobility, and encouraging more Sarawakians to consider public transport as a viable daily commuting option,” he said in a statement today.
Looking ahead, Kong emphasised that efforts will now focus on raising public awareness of BAS.MY Kuching and monitoring ridership across all routes.
He acknowledged the growing public demand for expanded services, particularly in underserved areas, and assured that these requests are currently under serious review.
“At the same time, routes with consistently low ridership may be reassessed. We are committed to ensuring that the limited resources and budget available are put to the most effective use, which may include route adjustments to serve more densely populated or high-demand areas,” he explained.
In conjunction with today’s launch, the team also inspected the newly established temporary bus hub at the Open Air Market, which now serves as the central departure point for all 10 routes. This follows the closure of the Saujana Bus Terminal to make way for the Kuching Urban Transportation System (KUTS) project.
Kong noted that the relocation has led to increased congestion in the city centre and assured that CVLB Sarawak is working closely with Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) to explore more suitable alternative locations for the bus hub to reduce disruption to traffic and road users.
“We remain committed to building a better, more efficient public transport system for all in Kuching and Sarawak. We thank the public for their support and urge everyone to continue supporting the BAS.MY Kuching initiative,” he said. — DayakDaily
