KUCHING, March 6: The Bario STOLport runway upgrade project has reached a significant milestone, achieving a physical progress of 50.62 per cent and remaining ahead of schedule, with full completion expected by September 2026.
In a post on its social media, Public Works Department (JKR) Sarawak said that the project aims to enhance air transport facilities in Sarawak’s interior, improving both flight safety and operational efficiency for the local community.
JKR Sarawak director Datu Ir Cassidy Morris has visited the project site on Thursday (March 5) to inspect its progress in conjunction with the Project Empowerment Series Two initiative.
During the visit, he observed ongoing works that include site clearing, earthworks and geotechnical preparation, drainage systems, runway extensions, and construction of taxiways and access roads.
The project also encompasses the construction of an Automated Weather System (AWS) building, terminal building repairs, mechanical and electrical installations, as well as additional safety measures such as fencing and wind indicators.
Further enhancements include apron parking expansion, construction of the Head of Stand Road, and resurfacing of existing parking areas to support smoother airport operations.
JKR Sarawak emphasised that the project reflects the department’s commitment to delivering infrastructure efficiently, ensuring high quality, and contributing positively to the socio-economic development of rural communities in Sarawak. — DayakDaily
