KUCHING, March 10: Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii Lee Wuen has proposed to Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng to let his service centre fund a walkway upgrade project at the Bintawa Hawker Centre.
In a press statement issued today, Dr Yii said that during his visit to the Bintawa Hawker Centre on March 8 with Pending assemblywoman Violet Yong, they received complaints from the public and hawkers on the pedestrian walkway that connects the main road to the hawker centre.
He elaborated that despite the renovation done for the hawker centre, the brick-paved walkway has deteriorated due to heavy rain, forming gaps that pose a safety hazard.

Later on that same day, he visited the Kenyalang Hawker Centre, where he met Wee and had the opportunity to present his proposal to him.
“In order to enhance safety for the public, I propose upgrading the entire walkway to ensure a safer and more durable pathway for all pedestrians.
“Additionally, I also suggest installing railings along the walkway near the drainage area, especially for those visiting the hawker centre early in the morning,” he said.
He also added that he had sent an official letter to Wee and hoped that MBKS would approve his proposal, which was aimed at improving the business environment for hawkers while ensuring the public’s safety.
“I hope that MBKS would approve the proposal as soon as possible so that the upgrading works can commence without delay, ensuring a safer walkway and environment for the hawker centre,” he said. — DayakDaily
