KUCHING, Jan 10: Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii distributed school uniforms worth a total of RM55,400 to 25 schools around the city today.

The Democratic Action Party (DAP) lawmaker, in a statement, said the “Bandar Kuching Back to School” programme was carried out to address the needs of poor students in the respective schools.

“We have been in contact with all the schools in the constituency since last year to find out the number of students in need.

“Such programme was carried out to address the needs of the poorer students regardless of race or background in each school, and to give them the confidence and encouragement in their studies, as they start the new schooling year,” Dr Yii said in a statement.

He raised the need for elected representatives to collaborate with school authorities to address the need of poor students, as well as ensuring students can get the best quality in education and a more conducive environment.

Dr Yii added that the uniforms and school shoes were provided according to the specific size of the recipients. Each student received two sets of uniforms and a pair of shoes.

“It was really a joy for us to see the smiles on their faces when each of the students received their new shoes and uniforms.

“At the same time, it was heartbreaking to hear from schools of some students who turned up in old, dirty uniforms and worn out shoes. There was even a case, where the student came to school wearing slippers because the family could not afford the student a new pair of shoes,” he said when commenting on the event.

Dr Yii also took the opportunity to discuss with the various school authorities on other projects and future collaborations. — DayakDaily
