KUCHING, May 6: There is an urgent need to build a fire station at the Bakun Resettlement Scheme in Sungai Asap.

Kennedy Chukpai Ugon (GPS-Murum) reminded the august House that there had been many longhouse fires in recent times and that the nearest fire station from the resettlement scheme is in Bintulu, some 200km or roughly a 3-hour drive away.

“We cannot afford to see any more fire tragedies engulfing longhouses at the Bakun Resettlement Scheme area,” he told the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) today.

He pointed out that the proposed fire station would be serving some 20,000 people from 50 longhouses, including those from Tubau district and nearby areas.

“We thank the chief minister for announcing financial assistance of RM70,000 for each village that was burnt down in order to rebuild their longhouse again and also to lighten their burden,” said Chukpai.

He lamented that out of the 259 families affected by the recent fire at the Bakun Resettlement Scheme, 116 of them, including 44 from Uma Bawang, were still unable to rebuild their homes. — DayakDaily
