MIRI, March 2: The shipbuilding and ship repair industries in Sarawak continue to evolve and adopt innovative designs and quality workmanship that meet world standards, says Deputy Premier of Sarawak Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan.
He disclosed that, based on statistics, the industries have generated export valued at RM260 million in 2020, RM345 million in 2021 and RM339 million in 2022, despite the lockdowns and travel restrictions.
He added that these vessels were exported to Australia, Indonesia, United Arab Emirates and many other countries.
“This is a testament to the high quality and technical capabilities of our local shipbuilders,” Tengah said.
He was speaking at the certificates presentations to 46 trainees who completed their three-month programme of the Marine Rating course 2023 Pelita Maslaut in Miri on Thursday.
At the national level, he added, the marine industry plays an important role to support the development of Malaysia’s global trade as 90 per cent of the world trade is done through sea transport.
“Today, Malaysia has about 100 shipyards, where 60 of them are located here in Sarawak. Thus, the industry has been identified as among the key growth areas under the Post-Covid 19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030 for Sarawak as we strive to become a high income economy by 2030,” he pointed out.
Tengah also reminded industry players to keep abreast on the latest developments in technology and innovation in order to be competitive.
“The government is committed to further improving our nation’s competitiveness in the global market by developing our national technology through greater R&D and strengthening the industrial sectors,” he said.
Also present were Ministry of International Trade, Industry and Investment (Mintres) advisor Datuk Mohd Naroden Majais and Pelita Maslaut managing director Masni Amit. — DayakDaily
