KUCHING, Oct 19: Authorities seized 2,340 kilogrammes of subsidised polybag cooking oil and 936 kilogrammes of packet granulated sugar at a retail outlet on Jalan Setia Raja yesterday (Oct 18).
The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) Sarawak stated that the trader is facing legal action for possessing or controlling controlled goods under suspicious circumstances, which suggests a possible violation.
In a press release, KPDN Sarawak’s Enforcement Section revealed that the inspection was conducted following a public complaint about the online sales of cooking oil.
A team of six officers uncovered a total of 2,340kg of subsidised 1kg polybag cooking oil and 936kg of coarse sugar packets, along with related documents. The estimated value of the seized goods is RM8,517.60.
The case is being investigated under Section 21 of the Supply Control Act 1961.
Meanwhile, another trader in Sibu also faces legal action after the KPDN Sibu Branch found the business imposing unlawful conditions on buyers purchasing subsidised 1kg polybag cooking oil, a controlled item.
During the operation, enforcement officers found 374kg of polybag cooking oil in storage. This violation was discovered during Ops Samar inspections across several business premises in Sibu District on Oct 18.
The case is being investigated under Section 19 of the Act for imposing conditions without the approval of the Supply Controller.
If convicted, offenders face fines of up to RM1 million, imprisonment of up to three years, or both for a first offense.
The public is encouraged to assist the Ministry by reporting any misappropriation of subsidised controlled goods to help combat activities that cause significant losses to both the people and the nation.
