KUCHING, Feb 6: The Austrian government is keen to work with the private sector in Sarawak to enhance trade and business between the two regions.

The ambassador of Austria Dr Michael Postl believed that there are business collaborations and partnerships which the country’s business community can tap into with its counterpart in Sarawak.

He also believed both parties can work together to boost the trade and economic development of both regions.

He communicated the message to Sarawak Business Federation (SBF) president Datuk Abang Abdul Karim Tun Openg during a courtesy call at the latter’s office yesterday to discuss potential bilateral cooperation.

Meanwhile, SBF in a statement revealed the Austrian ambassador is especially keen to explore opportunities with the private sector in Sarawak.

From a discussion with the ambassador, it gathered that Postl has acknowledged that there is much untapped potential in Sarawak compared to Peninsular Malaysia.

SBF added the meeting proved to be valuable for both parties.

It noted both parties had opportunities to exchange ideas on enhancing trade and investment in Sarawak, especially in the areas of hydro energy, medical tourism, transportation, agriculture and aquaculture, logistics and other industries.

Meanwhile, SBF noted that Postl’s delegation had also met with SBF council members and local businesspeople who are interested to foster economic ties between Austrian and Malaysian firms, especially in Sarawak.
