BAU, March 15: Bung Jagoi, one of Sarawak’s hidden gems, is now more accessible with a newly upgraded 400-meter stretch of tarred road in Kampung Plaman Bu’ow (next to Kampung Serasot).
Funded under the Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) at a cost of RM150,000, this upgrade enhances the journey for hiking enthusiasts to the foot of Bung Jagoi, one of the three entrances, alongside the other two near Kampung Duyoh.
Tasik Biru assemblyman Dato Henry Harry Jinep said the improvements are part of efforts to establish Bung Jagoi as a premier eco-tourism destination.
“In addition to the road upgrade, RM100,000 has been allocated for parking facilities, allowing villagers to set up small stalls to offer refreshments and local products to hikers.
“The enhancements under the Greater Kuching Coordinated Development Agency (GKCDA) are expected to be fully completed this year,” he said during a visit to the site today.
DayakDaily also received information that the other two foothill entrances to Bung Jagoi are in Kampung Duyoh.
The first is a normal hiking route through the village, while the second allows 4WD vehicles to drive up to 2km distance.
A new tender has been called to construct and complete the road that will eventually reach the summit, with only 500 meters left to be finished.
Bung Jagoi currently draws around 11,000 visitors annually, a number expected to rise with improved infrastructure and nearby attractions such as the AirBorneo airline and the upcoming Serikin Immigration, Customs, Quarantine, and Security (ICQS) complex.
With its scenic trails, historic Bidayuh settlement, and serene waterfalls, Bung Jagoi is a haven for nature lovers.
At present, Bung Jagoi offers seven homestays, each accommodating around 10 guests.
“There’s also potential for glamping and more extensive camping experiences.
“Plus, SESCO is working on connecting 24-hour electricity to the site through GKCDA funding, enhancing visitors’ experience in the great outdoors,” Henry added.
With over RM3 million allocated for infrastructure upgrades, including electricity, water supply, and a community hall, Bung Jagoi is ready to welcome more hikers and adventure seekers.
Henry also hinted at a special post-Easter programme where agencies like GKCDA and the Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR) will spend a night at Bung Jagoi. This unique event aims to raise awareness about the site’s potential while engaging with the local community.
However, Henry acknowledged that Bau town lacks hotels, with only small inns and homestays available.
To address this, he revealed that major investments are underway, including the Tasik Biru Resort City and Bau Golden Square projects, which will introduce at least 200 hotel rooms within the next two to three years. – DayakDaily
