Asst Minister issues stop-work order on telco tower under construction

The installation work stopped immediate effect.

MIRI, Jan 6: The construction of a telecommunication tower (telco) in Taman Delight Lorong 8 near Miri Airport has been ordered to be stopped with immediate effect.

This is in response to protests by residents who have complained that the construction of the 30-meter tall tower is too close to their residential area.

The stop-work order was given by Assistant Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Sebastian Ting on Wednesday morning after he visited the area.

“The installation works will not proceed until a solution is found,” Ting who is also Piasau assemblyman said when met by reporters after he had inspected the area.

He said the residents have expressed their concerns about living too near to the tower which could be a health hazard.

“I was shocked when being told that the contractor has completed the installation on Tuesday within three hours, despite the objection and that is why I’ve come today and after meeting with the residents here, I have decided to instruct the installation (wiring works) to stop with immediate effect,” Ting pointed out.

He assured the residents that any wiring works on the telco tower will not proceed.

Ting added, that the over-half-acre land on which the tower is being built had already been approved for the construction of a mini recreational park.

“The area has been gazetted for the use of the residents to have a mini recreational park, and that is why I was surprised when the contractor proceeded with the installation (of the telco tower),” he said. – DayakDaily.
