Aspirasi: Election results reflect people still buy “development” theory, can’t see big picture of independence

KUCHING, Dec 19: The 12th Sarawak Election results highlighted that the people of Sarawak still vote for the “development” theory because the big picture of independence and sovereignty remains incomprehensible for many.

This is what Sarawak People’s Aspiration Party (Aspirasi) president Lina Soo opined after a devastating election finish where the party was unable to make any gain and progress in pushing forward their agenda, especially to call for a Sarawak independence referendum.

“(Tun Dr) Mahathir (Mohamad) is right. The people of Sarawak do not want independence. Sarawakians want autonomy, not independence.

“They still believe that only the government of the day can serve their needs and fulfillments today.

“Sarawak independence and sovereignty remains the pie in the sky,” she said in a statement today.

Despite this, Soo expressed thanks on behalf of Aspirasi to all voters who voted for the candidates and shared their political sentiment that only national independence is the true pathway to Sarawak’s future.

Aspirasi, she emphasised, will continue its political struggle for an independent sovereign Sarawak.

“Politics is never about one election, and Aspirasi is here for the long haul.

“We will never abandon Sarawakians who share our dream and our aspiration for Sarawak independence, even if there are not many of us for now,” she said.

Soo further assured that Aspirasi will continue its struggle and nurture the flame of Sarawak nationalism which they believe will in time come to be Sarawak’s shared aspiration.

“So that one day Sarawak shall be the free and prosperous Sarawak it is meant to be, and what we believe the people of Sarawak truly deserve,” she added. — DayakDaily
