Asfia now M’sia’s longest serving legislative Speaker, reappointed as Sarawak DUN Speaker for 10th term

KUCHING, Nov 18: Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nasar has been reappointed as Speaker of the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly (DUN) for a tenth consecutive term, cementing his position as the longest serving legislative Speaker in Malaysia.

According to a press statement, the new term spans from November 16, 2025 to November 15, 2027. Having first assumed the position on November 15, 2000, Asfia has served for more than two decades, making him one of the most experienced legislative figures in Malaysia’s administrative history.

The swearing in ceremony took place before the Yang di Pertua Negeri Sarawak, Tun Pehin Sri Dr Haji Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, at the Sarawak Astana. The event was attended by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, Deputy Premiers, State cabinet members, the State Secretary, the Deputy Speaker and senior officials from various departments.

Asfia’s professional background spans law, corporate leadership and media. He holds a Bachelor of Laws from Leeds University, England and a Barrister-at-Law qualification from Inner Temple, London, along with a postgraduate certification in Port and Shipping Management from the University of Wales, Cardiff.

He began his career as Legal Advisor to the Sarawak Timber Development and Industrial Corporation from 1974 to 1976 before practising as a Solicitor and Advocate from 1976 to 2000. He later served as chairman of Interfinance Berhad from 1980 to 1991 and as editor in chief of The Sarawak Tribune from 1990 to 2000.

In Sarawak’s political landscape, Asfia has served as the State Assemblyman for the Kuala Rajang and Serdeng/Semop constituencies, and held the position of Deputy Speaker of the Sarawak State Assembly (1995–2000) before being appointed as Speaker. Since 2002, he has also held the position of Permanent Chairman of the United Bumiputera Party (PBB) and Chairman of the PBB Constitutional Committee. – DayakDaily
