KUCHING, Oct 23: After 25 years and five terms as Asajaya assemblyman, Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah says he is prepared to step aside if he is not renominated for the next 13th Sarawak Election.
The Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts said he would leave the decision to the party, adding that he was willing to continue serving if both the party and the people in his constituency still needed him.
“There are several of us who have been around for quite long. Like myself, I’ve been around for 25 years, five terms.
“Well, we’ll leave it to the party. Definitely on my side, I’m prepared to give up.
“But then if the party and the people in the constituency still feel that the services are still needed, then we cannot say no,” he added when speaking to reporters at the opening ceremony of the 2026 Sarawak Regatta at Kuching Waterfront here today.
On the possibility of incumbent assemblymen being dropped or stepping down, Abdul Karim said the matter would be decided by the Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg in his capacity as Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) president.
“He will decide who the new candidates will be and which incumbents will be dropped. The decisions will be announced shortly before nomination day. We’ll leave it to him, as I cannot take over that responsibility,” he said.
Meanwhile, Abang Johari has announced that the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS) will be dissolved on Monday (Oct 26), following consent from Sarawak Governor Tun Pehin Sri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, paving the way for the 13th Sarawak Election. — DayakDaily
