KUCHING, June 30: Rural folks should not believe entirely in every online post they come across on social media and should practise discernment over sensational posts involving top political leaders, says Deputy Sarawak Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah.

Uggah elaborated that the creators of these posts on social media could leverage Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology and are capable of creating a lot of things.

“Leveraging on AI technology can be a blessing and at the same time a curse, and be very disruptive and destructive,” he said at a Gawai “Ngiling Bidai” gathering for Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Bukit Saban leaders and members here today, according to a press statement.

Uggah cited a video clip supposedly showing current USA president Joe Biden conveying Gawai Dayak greetings as an example of content created using AI.

“Similarly, there was another clip where former president Donald Trump was seen doing the same thing. What is both stunning and mindblowing is that both of them had spoken in perfect Iban for the short message,” he added,

According to Uggah, this was the beauty and the danger of AI technology if misused.

“Imagine if such technology is exploited during the campaigning period of any general election. The false news created can result in confusion, suspicion, hatred and rejection.”

Uggah advised mobile phone owners to be very discerning when they come across such fake content.

Uggah who is Bukit Saban assemblyman also called on PBB grassroots leaders and members to prepare to face the next general elections and find new ways and means to keep the party strong and united.

“We must not be caught in a situation where we are complacent and unprepared. This can be exploited by our opponents,” he said.

Also present were Uggah’s wife, Datin Amar Doreen Mayang, Betong Member of Parliament Dr Richard Rapu and Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR) director Cassidy Morris. — DayakDaily
