KUCHING, Sept 19: Two days ago, local craft beer producer Zebrew has announced the withdrawal of its product named “Santubong” from the market after facing strong criticism from the public, including Santubong MP Dato Sri Nancy Shukri.

In a Facebook post, Zebrew said the decision was made “due to the overwhelming response and attention around the name Santubong,” adding that the product has been permanently removed from shelves.

“Due to the overwhelming response and attention around the name Santubong, we’ve decided to mark history with this product.

“After much thought, the name and product will no longer be used going forward and the product has been removed from the shelves,” the company stated.

The move came after Nancy raised objections on her official Facebook page on the same day, stressing that the naming of an alcoholic product after Santubong was insensitive, particularly to the majority Muslim community in the constituency.

“I strongly agree. It is clearly insensitive to the people of Santubong, most of whom are Muslims. The authorities should take stern action.

“We will also review the matter from a legal perspective to determine whether the producer has complied with relevant laws,” Nancy wrote.

Following Zebrew’s announcement, Nancy later updated her post, expressing relief over the withdrawal.

“Alhamdulillah, the alcoholic product using the name ‘Santubong’ has been withdrawn after objections,” she said. — DayakDaily
