KUCHING, Sept 22: Two Kuching students Albert Affleck Thomas and Nur Athirah Mohamad Dullah have received 2023 Region One Lions scholarship to pursue tertiary education in local universities.
According to a press release, the scholarship is an initiative of the Lions Clubs of District 308A2 Region 1 encompassing all the 16 clubs in Kuching and Samarahan district, aimed at providing financial assistance to students from underprivileged backgrounds in Sarawak to pursue their tertiary education in public or private universities within Malaysia.
Albert, who comes from a family of 11 siblings and grew up in a squatter village in Kuching, was overjoyed, saying he was honoured and grateful to be selected.
He will be pursuing a Diploma in Building surveying at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Perak campus with the RM10,000 scholarship.
Meanwhile, Nur Athirah, who will be pursuing a Degree in Social Science at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) in Bangi, will receive RM8,000.
The amount for each awardee was determined according to his/her specific needs and family background, the statement read.
Past District Governor Dr William Voon, Chairperson of the Scholarship Committee, presented award certificates to the recipients at a simple ceremony at the Lions Nursing home, Kuching yesterday (Sept 21).
Also present were members of the committee (past presidents) Albert Tang, Dr Chong Pek Lin and Chong Nam Fah as well as Matron of the Lions Nursing Home, Josephine Tie. — DayakDaily
