MIRI, July 21: The prevalence of obesity among children in Malaysia, particularly in urban areas, is increasing at an alarming rate, according to Deputy Minister for Health Malaysia, Datuk Lukanisman Awang Sauni.

Speaking to the local media during a press conference today after launching the ‘Kembara Sihat Sejahtera HePiLI’ event with Didi and Friends at Imperial Permaisuri Mall here, Lukanisman highlighted the growing concern over the trend.

“For example, in Putrajaya, three out of ten children are obese. This rise is especially evident in big cities due to the consumption of processed foods often provided by career-oriented parents. These foods, when taken in excess, contribute significantly to obesity. Additionally, many children prefer snack foods and instant noodles,” he stated.

The Deputy Minister noted that this trend is not confined to urban areas alone.

“Obesity among children is also a problem in rural areas due to excessive nutrition and a lack of vegetables and fruits in their diet. While we can’t halt food festivals, we must emphasise nutritional discipline as the best approach to healthy consumption,” he added.

Lukanisman emphasised the importance of healthy eating habits for both parents and children.

“We need to prioritize addressing obesity as a health issue because it can lead to other health problems in the future, such as diabetes, hypertension, and other conditions as the child grows. Early onset of these diseases can hamper productivity in the future,” he pointed out.

The event also saw the presence of Miri Member of Parliament Chiew Choon Man, Miri Mayor Adam Yii, and Sarawak Health Director Dr Veronica Lugah. — DayakDaily
