TANJUNG MANIS, Jan 2: AirBorneo’s first touchdown at Tanjung Manis Airport today marked a significant step forward in strengthening connectivity and supporting economic growth in the region.
According to a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) news, the inaugural flight, which arrived at 9.20am, was warmly welcomed by Tanjong Manis Member of Parliament Dato Ir Yusuf Abdul Wahab, along with department heads and local community leaders at the airport.
Describing Jan 2 as a highly meaningful date, Yusuf said the occasion held special significance for both local residents and the broader development of the Tanjung Manis region.
“Today is a historic day for Tanjung Manis Airport as, at exactly 9.20am, we welcomed the inaugural AirBorneo flight to Tanjung Manis,” he told reporters today.
He expressed hope that the air service would be sustained and expanded in the future, including the deployment of larger aircraft such as ATR planes to enhance passenger capacity and operational efficiency.

Currently, AirBorneo operates one daily flight from Kuching to Tanjung Manis, with a return flight to Kuching, using a Twin Otter aircraft capable of carrying up to 16 passengers.
AirBorneo has also made history as Malaysia’s only State-owned airline to officially commence operations in 2026, in line with the Sarawak government’s aspiration to strengthen air connectivity and drive regional development.
In a related development, Yusuf said the expansion of Tanjung Manis Airport, which has been approved by Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, is expected to significantly enhance the airport’s capacity to receive larger aircraft and accommodate more passengers.
He further expressed hope that air routes would eventually be extended to destinations such as Bintulu, Miri, Kuala Rajang, and even international destinations, which would further stimulate economic growth and boost the tourism sector in the region. — DayakDaily
