SIBU, Aug 25: With AirAsia extending its Singapore-Sibu-Singapore route, Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng is hopeful the sector will operate on a permanent basis.
“AirAsia has extended this sector to the end of March next year. But I would like to urge AirAsia and the Sarawak Transport Ministry to have this sector on a permanent basis to alleviate the concern of travellers.
“More international visitors would also be attracted to the central region of Sarawak if we have a permanent flight via Singapore,” he said during an incentive presentation ceremony at SMK Bukit Assek today.
Chieng said according to AirAsiaās records, the response to the sector had been encouraging.
“The lowest passenger load was 62.35 per cent in March while the highest was in December 2022 with 72.58 per cent,” he added.
AirAsia extended the sector by another five months to the end of March 2024. The sector was supposed to end on October 27 this year.
This four times weekly route flies every Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday. It started on December 16, 2022.
Meanwhile, during the event, Chieng presented an incentive award to Imran Azim Iskandar, who emerged as champion in the classical category of the World Championship of Performing Arts (WCOPA) in Anaheim, California, United States, recently.
Imran, who plays the violin, is a Form 5 student of SMK Bukit Assek. During the championship, he also won a silver medal each in the contemporary and original works categories, as well as a bronze medal each in the jazz and open categories.
About 70 countries took part in the competition. ā DayakDaily
