KUCHING, July 26: Today’s youth should not take shortcuts in expressing creativity, as shown by their reliance on artificial intelligence (AI).

In a TVS news report, Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts, Datuk Snowdan Lawan, said this sparked debate over their actual talent and the ownership status of such works.

He noted that this trend was evident when over half of the 2,000 submissions received for the logo design competition for Sarawak’s new airline, AirBorneo, were created using AI.

Snowdan also hinted at the possible consequences if the organisers were to select an AI-generated logo as the official logo of AirBorneo.

“Imagine if a logo generated by AI is chosen as the official AirBorneo logo—you can just imagine what the AI company might do. They may claim royalties over the logo because it is not original,” he said.

He said this during the launch of ‘The Continuum: 3 Generasi (Three Generations, One Vision — Past, Present, and What’s to Come)’ exhibition held at the Hoan Gallery in Kota Samarahan on Friday (July 25).

Snowdan further added that the youth’s artistic talents must be nurtured organically and naturally without relying on AI.

At the same time, he reaffirmed his ministry’s commitment to strengthening local culture through storytelling, fostering creativity, and spiritual enrichment of local communities. — DayakDaily
