KUCHING, Jan 10: The Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC) is preparing several initiatives to enhance the national legal system this year, with a focus on Sabah and Sarawak.

Malaysian Attorney General, Dato Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar, announced that the AGC is considering the establishment of the Appellate and Trial Division Unit for Sabah and Sarawak.

This unit will handle criminal appeals with experienced and highly skilled deputy public prosecutors, factoring in all relevant considerations.

“Secondly, the full implementation of the ‘e-Daftar’ system in Sabah and Sarawak will ensure seamless online registration of investigation papers submitted to the AGC by enforcement agencies.

“Lastly, we are undertaking the relocation and upgrading of seven district prosecutor’s offices, including one in Lahad Datu, Sabah. This initiative aims to create a conducive working environment for our officers across the states,” he said during his speech at the Opening of the Legal Year (OLY) Sabah and Sarawak 2025 held at the Hikmah Exchange Event Centre (HEEC), as reported by the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS).

In line with modernising operations, the AGC’s Civil Division is exploring ways to streamline approvals granted by the Attorney General through digital innovation.

“We are pleased to announce the successful implementation of online applications through the AGC’s e-Services Portal for all requests under Section 9 of Act 359, effective August 1, 2024,” he shared.

Dusuki also highlighted the AGC’s engagement with Sarawak. Prosecutors in Sarawak visited Sentosa Hospital in Kuching to gain insights into the treatment of mentally ill patients.

“This exposure has enriched prosecutors’ understanding of handling cases under Section 342 of the Criminal Procedure Code involving defendants suspected of insanity,” he explained.

Earlier in the day, the Sabah and Sarawak Legal Year 2025 Parade saw the participation of 600 legal practitioners.

The parade, which spanned 1.1 kilometers from the Old Court Complex to HEEC, marked the official start of the judicial year for the two regions.

The event was led by Chief Justice Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat and included representatives from Taiwan, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Peninsular Malaysia.

Accompanying her were President of the Court of Appeal Tan Sri Datuk Amar Abang Iskandar Abang Hashim, Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak Tan Sri Abdul Rahman Sebli, Chief Judge of Malaya Dato Sri Hasnah Dato Mohammed Hashim, and Attorney General Dato Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar.

Also present were Sarawak Attorney General Dato Sri Saferi Ali, Sabah Attorney General Datuk Brenndon Keith Soh, and Deputy Sarawak Secretary (Operations) Datu Hii Chang Kee. — DayakDaily
