KUCHING, Oct 19: Search efforts for five missing individuals after a tragic boating accident in Bintawa have entered their second day, with advanced sonar technology being deployed to scan the riverbed for clues.

Kuching police chief Mohamad Farhan Lee confirmed that the Search and Rescue (SAR) operation began at 6.30am, involving multiple agencies, including the Police Air Unit (PGU) and the Sarawak Security and Enforcement Unit (UKPS).

A specialised team is conducting sonar scans of the area where the missing individuals were last seen, while another team is combing the surrounding areas for any signs of the victims.

Farhan also urged participants in the ongoing regatta training to follow safety protocols, particularly the use of life vests, and praised the event organisers for their safety preparations.

The incident occurred on Oct 18, when a boat carrying 15 participants capsized during regatta training near Royal Bay Commercial Center, Jalan Buruh in Bintawa. — DayakDaily
