KUCHING, July 24: The next phase of the Adong Kechil West (AKW) development will focus on delivering production facilities and essential infrastructure to support sustained gas supply for the Miri Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) Power Plant project, which is targeted for commissioning by the end of 2027, reinforcing Sarawak’s long-term energy security.
This follows the successful commencement of first oil production by Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (PETROS) and PETRA Energy Berhad (PETRA) from the AKW Early Production System (EPS) in Block SK433, marking the revival of Sarawak’s onshore oil and gas industry after almost five decades.
The milestone builds on the successful drilling of AKW appraisal-development wells in 2023 and represents a significant step in Sarawak’s efforts to revitalise and develop its onshore petroleum resources through a Sarawak-led approach.
According to a media release today, the AKW EPS adopts a phased development strategy that enables early production while providing critical reservoir and operational data to support future field development. The insights gathered will contribute towards the integrated development of surrounding discoveries as an AKW cluster, maximising resource potential and supporting sustainable long-term gas supply.
The field is expected to achieve production of up to approximately 800 barrels of oil per day.
PETROS senior vice president for Sarawak Resource Management, Dato Abang Arabi Abang Narudin, said the achievement represented more than a project milestone, highlighting the strength of the partnership that enabled its successful delivery.
“We are not just celebrating a successful project milestone, but the strength of the partnership that made it happen. As Sarawak’s Resource Manager for Onshore Petroleum Operations, PETROS remains committed to ensuring the responsible exploration and development of the State’s hydrocarbon resources through purposeful partnerships and operational excellence, creating long-term value for Sarawak and its people,” he said.
The AKW development is expected to contribute towards strengthening Miri’s future energy supply resilience by unlocking the potential of Sarawak’s onshore petroleum resources. The production facilities and supporting infrastructure planned under the next phase will form the foundation for delivering gas supply to the Miri CCGT Power Plant, scheduled for commissioning by the end of 2027.
The successful commencement of first oil from AKW underscores the viability of Sarawak’s onshore hydrocarbon resources and reflects the State’s continued commitment to responsible resource development in support of its future energy requirements.
