SIBU, Sept 30: Sarawak will implement the Acute Water System, capable of producing 4 million litres of water per day, to meet the urgent need for water supply in the Sungai Sadit area.

According to a report by Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS), Sarawak Minister of Utility and Telecommunication (MUT) Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi said the project will be completed in less than a year to ensure sufficient water supply to the affected areas as the locals await the completion of the existing Salim Water Plant’s upgrading project.

“This system will operate in the Sungai Sadit area, which will help meet the needs of the residents and reduce the pressure on the Salim and Bukit Limah Water Treatment Plants, which are currently operating at a capacity of 45 million litres per day.

“When the Acute System is fully operational, it will take over the role of water supply that previously depended on these reservoirs, providing a more stable and resilient alternative,” he reportedly said when met by the media during the Intervention Program Through the Acute System for Water Supply in Sungai Sadit which was held at Muka Sauk Air, Sibu, yesterday (Sept 29).

Meanwhile, he updated that the Salim Water Plant will be upgraded to increase the water production capacity from 150 million litres to 300 million litres per day, with an expected completion period of 30 months.

At the same time, Julaihi informed that the Sarawak government had approved an allocation of RM1.83 billion to replace dilapidated water pipes throughout the State, with Sibu receiving an allocation of RM170 million.

“This pipe replacement project will involve a length of 2,743 kilometres throughout Sarawak, making Sibu one of the main focus areas.

“The government has allocated this allocation to be implemented within five years to ensure a better and durable water pipe network,” he added.

To date, the repair and replacement of 34 kilometres of pipes in Sungai Sadit have been completed, benefiting more than 9,000 residents in the area.

“This project, which costs RM10.5 million, is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to improve the water supply system.

“These measures reflect the commitment of the Sarawak government, under the leadership of the Premier (Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg), in solving the water supply problem and ensuring that the people of Sarawak, especially in Sibu, enjoy an adequate supply of clean water,” he emphasised.
