KUCHING, March 28: The late Nicholas Bawin Anggat’s tireless efforts to safeguard Sarawak’s rich heritage will never be forgotten, says activist Peter John Jaban.

In a statement issued on March 27, Peter expressed hope that Bawin’s legacy will continue to inspire future generations and remind them of the vital importance of defending their roots and ensuring the voices of indigenous communities are heard and respected.

“As the deputy president of Majlis Adat Istiadat Sarawak, he dedicated his life to preserving the rights, traditions, and heritage of the indigenous people. His unwavering commitment to protecting the land and culture of Sarawak has left an enduring impact on our hearts and in history,” he said.

Peter further described Bawin’s passing as a significant loss, saying that he was a humble and honest man who helped the indigenous communities without expecting anything in return.

“Much like a candle that burns itself out to provide light for others, Bawin dedicated himself to the well-being of others.

“May his soul rest in peace, and may his legacy continue to guide us as we honour the land and people of Sarawak,” he said.

Bawin, a veteran Dayak politician and Native Customary Rights (NCR) land advocate, passed away on March 26 at the age of 65.

He took his final breath at 9.20pm at the Normah Medical Specialist Centre in Kuching after battling an illness. — DayakDaily
