KUCHING, June 22: The tallest flagpole project in Malaysia should be the pride of Sarawakians.
According to a news report from Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) today, Minister of Tourism, Performing Arts and Creative Industry Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the 99 meter flagpole is an iconic new landmark and will become the latest tourist attraction in the State.
“Tourism doesn’t just mean people come to buy crafts or visit museums. We also need to build infrastructure and iconic buildings to attract visitors,” he said.
He opined that there should not be a question about the cost of the flagpole project being expensive or saying that the money is better used for the purpose of building hospitals and schools when the project is financed by the private sector.
He also questioned whether tourists would come to Sarawak if only hospitals and schools are bring built in the State.
“We need to be practical. We built the Darul Hana Bridge, the Darul Hana Musical Fountain, including the performing arts center to make the community amazed and be proud of it, including this pole.
“So do not question about the cost too much. We can earn money, but I have to admit that we need to spend wisely and not spend until our pockets are empty. I do not agree with that,” he added.
The flagpole, which is a corporate social responsibility (CSR) project undertaken by the private sector, is reported to cost RM30 million to build. — DayakDaily
