MIRI, Aug 27: Sarawak is committed to not only empower young people with knowledge and skills but also nurturing them with an upright personality for they are the leaders of tomorrow who will shape and impact the future of this State.
Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah emphasised that Sarawak wants young people with high sense of integrity, honesty and reliability in leadership to steer the State to greater heights.
“Of course, we wouldn’t want to see this State being led by leaders who are corrupt… those who only think about their own pockets. We want to nurture our children into responsible citizens.
“We want our youths to be healthy, knowledgeable, have essential virtues and become future leaders who will continue to lead Sarawak towards prosperity with a thriving economy and development,” he said when addressing the State-Level National Youth Day celebration here today.
Abdul Karim pointed out that young people made up a crucial segment who contributed positively to the society and development in Sarawak and Malaysia as a whole.
With that, he reminded the young voters, especially the 18-year-old who will be able to cast their ballots for the first time, to vote wisely in the upcoming 15th General Election (GE15).
The GE15 will welcome a new generation of voters following the passing of the law to lower the voting age from 21 to 18 and allow automatic voter registration by Parliament in July 2019.
Also present at the celebration were Deputy Minister for Youth and Sports Development Dato Gerald Rentap Jabu and Deputy Minister for Entrepreneur Development Dr Ripin Lamat.
More than 400 youths attended the celebration held at the National Youth Skill Training Institute Miri (IKBN). — DayakDaily
