KUCHING, Oct 11: Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) vice-president Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah believes that Undi18 will be implemented in time to allow those aged 18 to 21 to vote in the upcoming Sarawak Election (PRN12).

ā€œAs it is, the next PRN, that one (Undi18) will be applicable.

ā€œThe automatic registration is ongoing. I even checked on my son who is 18-years-old and his name is already inside (electoral roll).

ā€œIt is a question of when EC (Election Commission) wants to gazette the date,ā€ he said during a press conference prior to the flagging off of Dā€™Drift 2021 here today.

He noted the latest electoral roll released by the EC was up to September 2021.

Abdul Karim who is the Asajaya assemblyman said there has an increase of more than 5,000 voters in his constituency.

He said he was unperturbed if Undi18 is in effect by PRN12 as the Sarawak Election will need to be held sooner or later.

On the dissolution of the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) to pave the way for PRN12, he noted Sarawak is currently under the Emergency Ordinance until February 1, 2022.

For the Sarawak Emergency to be lifted before February 1, 2022, Abdul Karim said Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg has to advise Sarawak Governor Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud in consultation with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Al-Sultan Abdullah Riā€™ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah.

Abdul Karim said Sarawak is supposed to hold PRN12 within 60 days following the automatic dissolution of DUN on June 6 this year but due to the Emergency Ordinance, Sarawakā€™s administration is currently living on ā€œborrowed timeā€.

Abdul Karim believed PRN12 should be held as soon as possible regardless of whether Undi18 is in effect. ā€” DayakDaily
