Abdul Ghani Salleh appointed as new EC chairman

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 21: Datuk Abdul Ghani Salleh has been appointed as the new chairman of the Election Commission (EC) while Datuk Nik Ali Mat Yunus has been appointed as a member of the commission effective today.

Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Mohd Zuki Ali in a press statement said the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah has consented to the appointment of Abdul Ghani and Nik Ali, who are both 62 until they reach 66 years old, in accordance with Clause (3) Article 114 of the Federal Constitution.


Mohd Zuki said the last position that Abdul Ghani held before he retired on May 10, 2018 was EC secretary.

As for Nik Ali, Mohd Zuki said the last position Nik Ali held before he retired on May 19, 2018 was Higher Education Ministry deputy secretary-general (Development).

“With their qualifications and experience, they will be able to fully carry out the trust and responsibility as chairman and member of the commission in accordance with the Federal Constitution,” he said.

Mohd Zuki expressed his appreciation to former EC chairman Datuk Azhar Azizan Harun and the commission’s member Datuk Seri Ramlan Ibrahim for their services whilst with the commission. —DayakDaily
