KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 25: Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, was honoured with the prestigious Malaysian Institute of Planners (MIP) Honorary Fellow Award last night (Jan 24).
The award was presented to him at the Malaysian Institute of Planners Planning Excellence Awards 2024 (MIPPEA2024) ceremony by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
In his speech, Anwar praised Abang Johari’s leadership, describing his selection for the award as well-deserved.
“Abang Johari is one of the leaders who has shown that when politics in a state is stable, with leadership focused on development and the exploration of new ideas and policies, great progress can be made,” said Anwar.
“He is constantly seeking ways to unlock new energy opportunities, often discussing how to tap into the ocean’s potential for new returns. His leadership is a model for how to effectively plan for the state’s future,” he said as reported by TVS.
According to MIP, Abang Johari was selected for the award in recognition of his leadership excellence, particularly in urban development, energy, and environmental sustainability.
Under his leadership, Sarawak was acknowledged as a high-income State by the World Bank, driving the State’s transformation through global initiatives and positioning Sarawak as a leader in the green economy, with a target of achieving zero carbon emissions by 2030.
Also at the ceremony, the Sarawak Electronic State Planning Authority System was honoured with the MIP President’s Award for its excellence in transforming planning governance through digital innovation.
The award was received by Sarawak Secretary, Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki, and Deputy Minister for Urban Planning, Land Administration, and Environment Sarawak, Datuk Len Talif Salleh. — DayakDaily
