KUCHING, March 21: Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg hopes to leapfrog internet connectivity to 5G instead of incremental upgrading.

He said telecommunication groundwork is part of the basic infrastructure he would like to put in place in Sarawak and that he envisioned a Sarawak with 5G connectivity.

“That is why I want to go straight to 5G, rather than incremental. It may cost money but never mind. We will try to find the money to invest.

“When you leapfrog to 5G, the data and information you send or receive is in real-time, and it is easier to transact whatever you want to do,” said Abang Johari while delivering his keynote address at the Women of Tomorrow Boot Camp held from March 19 to 21 at a local hotel here.

Working towards the goal to make Sarawak a high-income economy by 2030, he said he has been laying down basic infrastructure such as power, water, telecommunication and road connectivity to achieve it. Still, at the same time, he has also been trying to explore new ideas.

To him, a person who leads can command technology and possesses the calibre, knowledge and willingness to explore new ideas.

“That is why I am saying here, if possible, we Sarawakians should aspire to be leaders in the economy of Malaysia.

“We have the resources. The only thing is the talent. So we have to upgrade talent development, and we must also comply with the international protocol and position ourselves there,” said Abang Johari. — DayakDaily
